In 2015 I had few days in Amsterdam. It is not often I am in a big city, so it was obvious to bring with me the camera and photographing people. The result you can see here in a video
“But that's the glory of foreign travel, as far as I am concerned. I don't want to know what people are talking about. I can't think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can't read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can't even reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses.”
Bill Bryson, Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europe
“Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses.” Bill Bryson says. The interesting assumptions I have taken is especial with my photos of people from Amsterdam. I decided from home that I would shoot some city street photos in Amsterdam. Exactly what should be in focus I didn't know when we arrived. But after a day walking around, I decided that I next day, when we were investigating Amsterdam even more, I would bring my telescope lens (Canon zoom 75-300) and focus on the daily life in Amsterdam. Who were the ordinary peoples in the streets, and what were they doing.?
Looking at the photos after we arrived home and worked with them preparing them for a video, makes me even more curious, and my imagination and fantasy grow. What is in the mind of those peoples? About what are they talking? How do they feel? How is their mood?
I have done all the photos in black and white. That to symbolize that I have moved into a gray zone. I have taken the photos without the people's knowledge. I did that because I wanted to catch the expressions as natural as possible. I considered to make text to each picture in the video but decided not to do. If I do, it will be my interpretation. I want people who look at my video to make their interpretations, open their heart and fantasy and guess what those people in the photos talk about, feel, in what mood they are, etc.
